On Thursday, June 20, 2024, first executive governor of Ebonyi state, Senator Sam Ominyi Egwu, will be 70 years old.
Senator Egwu who was governor of Ebonyi at the inception of the current democratic dispensation between May 29,1999 and May 29, 2007), was soon after, during the President Musa Yar'Adua's administration in 2007/2008, a Minister of Education and later a Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
Before his entry into the Nigeria's political turf, Senator Sam Egwu was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Crop Science, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).
Egwu's upcoming milestone birthday celebration in June, according to a public statement by Dr John Otu, a University Don, former Ebonyi Commissioner for Information in the Sam Egwu administration and Chairman, Organising Committee of the birthday event, described the celebration as a 'Call for Papers'.
Otu said the celebration of Egwu described as a "trail blazer and great icon of Nigeria", will be commemorated with a book publication of articles revolving around his life and achievements.
According Dr Otu, the book is titled Legacies of a Patriot: The Story of Senator Sam Egwu. The ex- commissioner also stated that the topics to be considered are as follows: Sam Egwu as a patriot; Sam Egwu as a scholar and Intellectual; Sam Egwu as a political leader - (a) As a Governor, (b) As a Minister, (c) As a Senator, (d) Sam Egwu as a Christian leader in Government and (e) Sam Egwu as a Community Leader.
Others include (f) Sam Egwu before political office beckoned, (g) Sam Egwu in the creation of Ebonyi State University, (h) Sam Egwu and his educational legacies, (i) Sam Egwu as a farmer and agripreneur, (j) Sam Egwu’s interventions on Igbo matters in the Federation, (j) Sam Egwu’s diplomacy (local and international) and Humanitarian interventions.
There are also other inclusions such as (k) Sam Egwu and infrastructural development, (L) Sam Egwu as a family man and (m) Sam Egwu’s leadership principles.
