On the eve of Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary, I reflected on Harold Smith. He’s not widely known in Nigeria. And that’s probably to be expected for a man whom the British establishment ostracised for decades for daring to be different, before his death. He was everything the British colonial authorities didn’t want him to be, and he paid for it.

I have often emphasized the thin, but important line between journalism and public relations.

A journalist thrives on controversy; every confrontation is newsworthy. Public relations, however, demands restraint, maturity, and controlled messaging. It is about protecting integrity, building credibility, and cultivating long-term trust.

Every person of Igbo descent asks himself this question daily: Why are we (Igbos) the butt of hate in Nigeria? It is a question that I have privately grappled with.

WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN? Do you shudder to think what might have happened if Nigeria didn't get the so-called independence in 1960? Imagine what might have been had the British retreated in 1980 or year 2000?

Would Abike joyously retweet a Twit that describes Yoruba as monkeys and gorillas? #abikemustresign

SHOE IN THE OTHER FOOT: It's quite predictable what would have happened if Abike Dabiri-Erewa were Igbo. She would have been fired within a week of openly endorsing a most vile tweet against the Yoruba nation.

Contemplate this: I am someone born in Kaduna just after Nigeria was born, cut my teeth in the undulating plains of Fika, ran around on the cloud-caressing plateaux of Gembu where I started my primary education but was raised in the serene, motherly town of Maiduguri, even though I was told my ancestors came from Yemen, the pride of all freedom fighters who love justice and fairness.

Numbers carry enormous power. They clothe themselves with infallible authority, convincing the public that they reveal cold, hard truth. Yet statistics are never innocent. In the hands of unclean minds they can be manipulated so crudely to serve selfishly, even to the level of destroying beyond redemption whatever they tag. History is filled with shady characters and agencies that have done that. Somehow, they always eventually, fail in the ignoble beat. Nigerians may have just witnessed an example of such an ill-purposed misadventure.

Eminent nationalist and renowned Zikist, late Chief Mokwugo Okoye, in his letter to late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe during the crisis in their party, NCNC (National Council for Nigeria and Camerons) in the early 60s, wrote this to the great Zik of Africa: " The greatest CASUALTY as it is with us and our party today, "IS THE TRUTH! Lies are fabricated, and news slanted to suit the political extigencies of the day.

The Olunloyo family of Ibadan needs no elaborate introduction. Who does not know Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo: For his brilliance, especially his globally established wizardry in Mathematics; his eccentrism, his wits, his humour, his politics, and his many controversies? His disciplinarian streak is another side of his I got to know when I spoke with a family member. And, of course, social media buffs will also be familiar with his daughter, Kemi; perhaps, no less controversial (even eccentric, to some)!
