The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to modernise agriculture and expand agribusiness opportunities through strategic international partnerships at the 2026 Paris International Agricultural Show in France.

The global agricultural exhibition, held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, attracted over two thousand companies and stakeholders from across the world showcasing innovations in livestock production, crop protection, farm mechanisation and agribusiness development.

Speaking during the event, the Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Danjuma Mahmood, said in an interview with journalist, the state delegation used the platform to engage foreign partners on initiatives that could boost agricultural productivity and improve the livelihoods of farmers in Kano.

He explained that discussions focused largely on the introduction of climate-smart and drought-resistant seed varieties capable of significantly increasing crop yields in the state.

Dr. Mahmood noted that the widespread problem of adulterated seeds has continued to affect farm productivity, adding that the state government plans to establish demonstration farms where improved seeds will be tested and showcased to farmers.

According to him, the adoption of the improved seeds could raise rice production from the current average of about 40 to 60 bags per hectare to as much as 120 to 140 bags.

The commissioner added that the Kano delegation also held meetings with international research institutions and agricultural technology companies with the aim of signing Memoranda of Understanding to support seed development, livestock improvement and animal feed production.

He further disclosed that discussions were held with manufacturers of agricultural machinery on possible collaborations to supply affordable and easy-to-maintain equipment such as mini tractors, threshers and solar-powered farm implements.

Dr. Mahmood said the proposed partnership could also strengthen local fabrication capacity in Kano, enabling the state to produce modern agricultural tools that would serve farmers across northern Nigeria and potentially supply neighbouring West African countries.

He described the Paris agricultural summit, held between February 21 and March 2, as an important platform for knowledge exchange and innovation, noting that Kano’s participation is part of efforts to accelerate agricultural transformation in the state.

The commissioner expressed optimism that the engagements at the summit would translate into increased farm productivity, higher incomes and improved livelihoods for farmers across Kano State. NNL
