The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had initially overturned Senegal's 1–0 victory due to alleged violations of Articles 82 and 84 following a penalty decision dispute during stoppage time. This led to the match being declared a 3–0 forfeit in favor of Morocco.
However, the Moroccan defender, guided by his mother's advice, firmly stated that neither he nor his teammates should accept the title, regardless of the ruling.
"My mother advised me to decline the AFCON trophy. I am officially rejecting it and hope my teammates follow suit. We were given an opportunity but did not succeed in winning," Hakimi expressed, acknowledging Senegal as the rightful champions.
He further reflected on the nature of football, emphasizing the presence of both victories and defeats. He commended Senegal for their fair win and the efforts they put into their triumph.
Hakimi showed respect for CAF’s decision but stood by his personal choice.
"I honor the decision, but I am officially declining the trophy. I did not win the 2025 AFCON. Congratulations to Senegal once again," he concluded warmly. NNL.
