ICIR HOLDS X-SPACE DISCUSSION ON HOW SPYWARE AND DIGITAL SURVEILLANCE THREATEN HUMAN RIGHTS

The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), will, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, hold an X-Space discussion on the theme, "How Spyware and Digital Surveillance Threaten Human Rights."

According to a statement/invitation to selected participants issued at the weekend by the ICIR Senior Programmes Officer, Chukwudi Iwuoha, the discussion aims to raise public awareness and stimulate conversations among citizens, policymakers, and other stakeholders on the need for stronger legal and policy frameworks to protect citizens from unlawful surveillance.
The event, ICIR further said, has become necessary because of the increasing cases of unlawful surveillance of citizens and the growing disregard for citizens' human rights and privacy, particularly as these issues mostly affect journalists and civic actors.
"We would therefore appreciate your participation, contributions, and insights during the session as we explore the different forms of surveillance technologies, how they are deployed, the legal frameworks for their deployment, implications for human rights, and measures for protecting citizens rights.
"We also wish to seek your kind collaboration and support by helping us to promote and amplify the event through your media and social media platforms".
The event is scheduled to commence at 11:00 a.m (WAT) at X-Space. NNL.
