The governorship ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Imo state gubernatorial election scheduled for November this year was keenly contested.

In the end, Professor James Okoroma, a journalist, University Lecturer and business man, clinched the ticket in the primary held on Monday in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Okoroma garnered 990 votes to defeat his opponent, Prof. Okey Okoro who scored 715 votes. The Primary election held after two previous unsuccessful attempts during which hired armed thugs made their way into the venue of the Primaries to vote.

As tension rose on the first day of the Primaries, the Police intervened to halt what would have become a bloodbath.

Announcing the results of the Primaries, Chairman of the Imo ADC Gubernatorial Electoral Panel, Barr. Igwe Emeka Benjamin, said that Okoroma scored the higher number of votes and was, therefore, returned elected.

Speaking after he had been declared winner of the primaries, Prof. Okoroma said he would overhaul Imo State's Health Sector, Education and Infrastructure.

He added that Security would be a top Priority in his government in order to attract investors and create employment for the Youth.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Police monitored the Primaries. NNL.
